Mrs. Laura Belle Akins Meeks, 99, of Prescott, died Monday, July 30, 2007, in Little Rock.

She was born in Nevada County, to William H. and Josephine Moss Akins. She was a retired teacher of the Prescott School District having graduated from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, formerly known as A. M. and N. College. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Prescott. She had attended the St. Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock, and the 2nd Baptist Church in Helena-West Helena. She was a secretary of the Southwest District Association for 25 years, Sunday school teacher, missionary society, mother of the church, Arkansas Teacher Retirement member and AARP member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Meeks Sr.; two brothers; and one sister.

Her survivors include two sons, Leo Meeks Jr. and Susie, and Vernon Meeks and Mary, all of Prescott; six daughters, Bettye Meeks Frazier and Noah of Houston, Texas, Nell Sampel and Lepoleon of Helena-West Helena, Josephine Russ and A.W. of San Diego, Calif., LaFae Glasgow and the late Clifford of Little Rock, Sandra McFadden and Charles of Little Rock, and Shirley Garmon and Bert of Hot Springs; one grandson who she raised, Tony Meeks of San Diego, Calif.; one grandson in U.S. Army National Guard in Kuwait, Gregory Garmon; one special nephew, Earl Levester Foster of Prescott; twenty-six grandchildren; forty-eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Prescott, with Rev. Mickey Manning officiating. Burial was in DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott. Arrangements were by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.

The family received friends Friday, Aug. 3, from 6-8 p.m. at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
