The Gurdon Police Department may be able to patrol with a little more peace of mind now that a new patrol car has been delivered.

The 2007 Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor was brought to Gurdon on Wednesday, July 25, after officers drove to Walnut Ridge to pick it up. The cars sticker price was $26,610, but the city was able to purchase the car for $20,152 due to a government contract with the company.

According to Gurdon Recorder/Treasurer Tambra Childres, the city has financed the car for two years and will make a monthly payment of just more than $900. She said that although the payment is a little high, the city was not willing to finance the car for longer than two years because that is about the length of time the cars are used before they are replaced.

Gurdon City Marshal Don Childres said the car that is being replaced is about four years old and has had numerous mechanical problems over the last several months. The motor in that car is believed to have blown up recently.

You cant depend on them after about two years, he said.

Tambra Childres said the city will eventually accept bids to sell the car that was recently replaced as well as an older Chevrolet patrol car that has not been used for quite some time.

In an effort to save money, the city will be reusing much of the equipment from the old car to outfit the new car for patrol. The only new equipment purchased was a new center console in which the radio and emergency light controls are mounted. The city will also have to pay to have the car striped.
