The Gurdon Police Department is investigating a break-in that occurred at a local grocery store on Monday, June 16.

According to a report on file at the Gurdon Police Department, Dougs Grocery, 801 S. Sixth St., was broken into between 1 and 3 a.m. The burglars are believed to have used a rock to bust the glass out of a side door before reaching in and unlocking it.

The report indicates that the burglars took one of the stores two cash registers from the front counter. The register contained $25.

Outside the store, Gurdon Marshal Don Childres found the top of the register and a sledge hammer believed to have been used to take the top off of the register.

After daylight, Childres and Gurdon officer Gary Marshal began a search of Gurdon and the surrounding area to find the missing register. The officers were successful as it was located in Caney Creek on Smithton Road, according to the report.

The register was retrieved the the creek. The report indicates that the register had never actually made it into the water as it landed on the bank of the creek after being thrown off of a bridge.

The register was taken to the Gurdon Police Department to be checked for fingerprints. No suspects are listed at this time.
