The view from Wendy's WorldBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune By now, my love of holidays has become almost legendary. In fact, its an important aspect of Wendys World and Ive had several folks ask me what holidays are coming up next. As always, Im looking for a reason (ok, excuse) for a day off, and here are some things Ive come up with. Believe it or not, July 27 is Take Your Pants for a Walk day. I found only a couple of references to this date on the Web, but what I did find indicates that youre supposed to get out and walk. Theoretically, the pants youre wearing are going to go along. This holiday is asking me get some exercise. What a stupid holiday. But someone came up with the perfect way to cap off Take Your Pants for a Walk day. Milk Chocolate Day is July 28. Now thats a holiday I can get into. Of course, after thoroughly celebrating on Saturday, Im probably going to have to take the pants for several walks. Cant have all that chocolate without something of substance and July 29 is National Lasagna day. Im happy to report that therell be dessert because July 30 is Cheesecake Day. Yes, there are other things coming up besides dates that have to do with food. July 30 is also father-in-law day and the 31st is Mutt Day - a date to celebrate all those mutts, whether four-legged or two. On another note, Im delighted to report that the flower box in front of our office is doing well. Its full of pink blooms and Mother Nature has taken care of the majority of this seasons watering duties. In fact, the flourishing flowers may have more to do with the fact that I havent been helping them along. In my own little garden at home, theres a battle being waged. We have a little patch of sugar baby watermelons. Actually, we have a little patch of sugar baby watermelon vines. The melons are simply disappearing faster than they can ripen. I would say that critters are carrying them off, but it seems wed find some rinds left nearby if that were the case. My neighbor has a Labrador that sleeps on my front porch, just feet from whats left of the watermelons. Let me explain about this dog. A couple of weeks ago, the dog was standing on my porch barking. And barking. And still some more. When I was finally fed up with it, I stepped outside to see what the problem was. Hackles were up and it was evident that there was an intruder nearby. After a bit of investigating, I discovered that it was a gas can. Wed left it where we filled up the mower and the dog was certain that it posed some sort of threat. As I went out to pick it up, this dog ran in front of me, growling in an apparent attempt to keep me from harms way. This is the same dog thats sleeping on my porch while something steals my water melons. Maybe I should put the gas can in the middle of the watermelon patch.
