Virgie SparksPublished Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in the Gurdon TimesVirgie Crain Sparks, 94, of Whelen Springs, died July 12, 2007, at her home. She was born March 2, 1913, in Mena, to Joseph Crain and Mary Wilkinson Crain. She was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by husbands General Lee Hayes and Floyd Sparks; five children, Jessie Paul Sparks, Gloria Jean Sparks, Veda Dickson, Verna Purifoy and Tommie Hayes; four sisters; two brothers; and two grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Vendon Hayes of Clarksville, William Sparks of Levelland, Texas, James Sparks of Whelen Springs and Glenda Currey of Gurdon; 17 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at Welch Funeral Home in Arkadelphia with Mike White and Billy Joe Christopher officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robbie Fulton, Brandon Malcom, Wesley Sparks, John Paul Sparks, Jimmy Don Currey, Ricky Windham, Andy Windham and Brandon Bradshaw.
