Greenville community wants annexation to cityBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, July 4, 2007 in the Gurdon Times Residents of the Greenville community have asked to be annexed into the City of Gurdon. Greenville consists of only a few houses and is located outside the Gurdon city limits toward Smithton, generally between Highway 67 and Smithton Road. Greenville resident Shirley Todd-Floyd addressed the Gurdon City Council during its meeting on Monday, June 25, and asked that the city consider annexing the community so that city services could be extended into the area. Floyd said those in the Greenville area are making the request for annexation because they desire sewer services and closer police and fire protection, among other things. She said depending on police responding from Gurdon would be much better than having to wait for Clark County deputies to respond from the Arkadelphia area. Floyd said the community members would also like gas lines extended into their area, but Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin said the city has no control over that utility. Were sitting in the middle of everything, Floyd said. I would like to see something happen real soon. Floyd said that the community already has city water service. Franklin said there is no sewer line near the area, and the installation of such a line would be extremely expensive. He said the residents of Greenville may be able to assist the city in applying for grants or loans to pay for a sewer line. Franklin said the first step toward annexation would be to get all of the land owners in Greenville and between Greenville and the city limits of Gurdon to agree to be annexed into the city. After the agreements have been obtained, the citizens of Gurdon would have to vote to accept the annexation, he said. We wouldnt be opposed to looking at that, Franklin said. No action was taken by the council on the matter. Franklin said he would get Floyd the name of a person to contact about the possibility of a grant to extend city sewer services to the area.
