FELON CAUGHTPublished Wednesday, March 10, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneMonroe Smith, 65, of Magnolia, found himself a guest of Nevada County after leading deputies on a chase down Highway 53 Friday night. According to reports, Smith was traveling south on hwy. 53 in the Falcon area and was clocked driving 72 miles per hours in a 35 mph zone. This prompted Otwell, and deputies Danny Martin and Larry Miller to give chase. Smith was finally stopped in Lafayette County by Martin. A search turned up a weapon with no serial number and more beer than the law allows in a dry county. A check of Smith's background showed him to be a felon as well. He was cited for speeding and charged with being in possession of a defaced firearm, being a certain person in possession of a firearm (felon in possession), over possession of beer and simple possession of a controlled substance. Smith could also be charged with parole violation as he was on parole at the time of the stop. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
