GHS graduates 57By Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, June 6, 2007 in the Gurdon Times The 57 graduating seniors of Gurdon High School accepted diplomas under clear skies and to the applause of family, friends and fellow students. The graduation ceremony took place May 25 at Go-Devil Stadium. Several of the speeches included a look back at more than a decade of public education. For many, thirteen years or even more were shared with fellow graduates. Meghan Robbins said the seniors had worked hard to obtain their seats at the field, and said it hadnt always been easy. She reminded her classmates of nap time in kindergarten and that theyd hated the restriction. She said that by the time they reached middle school, theyd all realized that nap time would be a great idea. High school held great promise, according to Robbins. But when they arrived, they searched for an emergency exit. What I do know is that everything ... has brought us here, Robbins said. Robbins acknowledged that some seniors faced the day with anticipation, others with fear. For each, she expressed the wish that the travels would be exciting and adventurous. Porcha Anderson told the seniors that theyd been led along a distinct trail up to this point, but said the time has come for each to find his own track. But which track is yours? Anderson asked. That all depends, on where it is going and where it might end. Anderson advised her classmates to slow down, be happy and to be open to friendship. LaDonna Lasker said she hopes her classmates will always remember friends and blessings. She spoke of the importance of attitudes and smiles. Dadrian Glenn also took his classmates for a walk down memory lane, reminding them of their tendency to borrow quarters on air-head day and the plentiful array of Mr. As candy. Must we leave after four short years? Glenn asked. For some of us, it was five. And then, I honor you all, my fellow classmates. ... Class of 2007, were not done yet, were just changing lanes. Samantha Sistrunk reminded classmates that the things in life truly worth doing are worth doing right. She said that the coming year is the start of something new, and said she hopes for all of them it will be the start of something great. Daniel Francis, valedictorian of the Class of 2007, said theres little doubt some are sad to be leaving, but are glad for future opportunities. Lets make no mistake about it, Francis said. We all made friends. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
