Both drivers involved in a traffic accident between a motorcycle and car received citations on Monday, May 21.

According to Gurdon Police Department officer Chris Russell, Brandon Bowie, 22, of 204 North Street, was cited for failure to yield and leaving the scene of an accident. Joshua Smith, 18, of 379 Highway 53 N., who was driving the motorcycle involved, was cited for careless and prohibited driving as well as for not having a motorcycle endorsement on his drivers license.

Russell said the accident occurred after Smith, who was eastbound on Crayton Street in a car, turned in front of Smiths eastbound motorcycle. The motorcycle then struck the front bumper of the car.

Police officers said that Smith was exceeding the speed limit on the motorcycle before the accident occurred as more than 130 feet of skid marks were left on the roadway.

After the two collided, Bowie allegedly left the scene, going to his home. Russell said Bowie lived about two houses away from the accident scene.

In a statement given to Gurdon police, Bowie stated that he left the accident and returned home because the driver of the motorcycle appeared mad and as if he wanted to fight. Bowie said he had intended to wait for police at his home.

No injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
