ANIMAL CRUELTYPublished Wednesday, March 10, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneTwo people have been formally charged in connection with an animal cruelty case reported last week, with another expected to be charged soon. According to NCSO reports, Rebecca Hulan and Curtis Donison were charged with 27 counts of cruelty to animals when 26 horses and a dog were found to be severely malnourished at the Hulan residence on county road 18, Feb. 25. Roy Johnson is expected to be charged as well. Nevada County Sheriff Steve Otwell received the call on the case and determined an animal protection society needed to be brought in. The horses were found to be 300 to 400 pounds underweight, with one on the ground in the pasture at the time officials arrived. A Hope veterinarian was called in and put this animal down. A dog was found chained to an out building near the house, and, because of its physical condition, was put to sleep as well. All the remaining horses but one were transported to Hope. The one horse was unable to get into a trailer and had to be euthanized. One other horse died from its condition at Hope. The rest of the horses were treated and adopted out, Sorrells said.
