June 1 and 2 have been set aside for the annual Chicken and Egg Festival in Prescott. And as always, theres a ton of egg-citing events for the entire family.

For example, everyone is invited to bring your own nest to the variety show scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Friday. Lawn chairs and blankets may be substituted for wooden boxes!

Prescott-Nevada County Executive Director Mary Godwin said the event is in its 20th year and has become a major attraction for the area.

This is a family-oriented festival, Godwin said. We try to have activities for all ages.

Godwin said that ranges from things for the youngsters including train and pony rides to the food events. The Prescott Rotary Club will offer their chicken in the rough dinners Friday beginning at 5 p.m. at the City Park pavilion. The Kiwanis country breakfast will be from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the same location.

Food concessions will be available throughout the event.

The balloon lift-off has become a popular part of the festival. Participants names will be put in balloons and released at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The idea is for the person who finds the balloon to contact the chamber with the balloons ending location. Once its been verified, a prize is issued for the balloon that traveled the greatest distance from the release point.

Little Mister Rooster and Little Miss Hen contests will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday at the park stage. The crowing contest will be held at noon and the turbo chick races will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Hula-hoop, jump rope, egg spoon race and egg toss contests will be held throughout the morning.

The cooking contest will be judged at the Prescott-Nevada County Library beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday and egg plates will be on display for the week following the festival.

The sports events are also popular, whether participants want to run, catch a softball or shoot a basketball. Horseshoes and tennis tournaments will also be held Saturday.

Godwin said the festival has grown over the years and has gained support.

We appreciate that the civic clubs and community get involved, Godwin said.

For information about any of the festival happenings or to register your group for a sporting event, contact the chamber at 887-2101.
