Emmet graduates 20By Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, May 16, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The graduation of 20 Emmet High School students was bittersweet in more ways than one. Students were headed out into the world that holds their future. Meanwhile, Emmet High School Principal Frank Henson has announced his retirement. Students Ashley Parmer and Morgan Chance presented Henson with an award from the senior class. Parmer said the award was the biggest surprise of the schools history because Henson is everywhere. You taught us many things, Parmer said of Henson. But one main thing is that you taught us to respect and love the Lord. Parmer cried openly as she said she believes God has a special plan for everyone. I believe Gods special plan for you was to spend your last year as principal with the class of 2007, Parmer said. Henson was visibly moved as he stepped forward to accept the award. We all appreciate those awards, Henson said. Now were going to present some awards to you. Seniors accepted an array of awards, including several full-tuition scholarships from regional schools. Henson wasnt the only educator to be recognized for service to the school. Gloria Ann Booker, who had taught school for more than four decades, was presented an award of thanks for those years. Teacher Mike Smith died last year after a battle with cancer and his wife received an award of thanks for his service as well. Steve Kelly, teacher at Emmet, presented the keynote address. Kelly told graduates that the word faith is often associated with religion, but that it applies to all aspects of life. He said the reason for kindergarten and junior high graduations is the same as a pep rally - its designed to give students the faith that they can reach higher goals. The opposite of faith, according to Kelly, is doubt. He said the students headed out to meet the world were a testament that they had overcome any doubt. Those caps and gowns youre wearing are a time-honored tradition, Kelly said. The proof of its importance is the crowd thats gathered around you. EHS class of 2007, youre leaving this place to go on with the rest of your life. Lets review and well have a test tomorrow. Whitney Spell, valedictorian, offered a thank you from the class to family, friends and teachers. Then Spell addressed her classmates. Wow, I thought this day would never come, she said. Today, our lives change before our very eyes. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
