Wolves play in state gameBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, May 9, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The Prescott Curley Wolves baseball team didnt finish the state playoffs but have returned with some impressive statistics and trophies. According to Prescott Head Coach Greg Smith, the 2007 Curley Wolves have a regional and conference title to their names - a first at least in recent history. The team finished the season with 21 wins overall and only four losses. Unfortunately, the last of those was a loss to Harding Academy May 5. The final score of that game was 8-7 and Smith said the Wolves lost at the bottom of the final inning. The Wolves took the first game of the playoffs against England. Smith said the Wolves handed out the level of play that got them to the playoffs, beating the opposition 11-1. He attributed the win to two things. We hit the ball, he said. Andy Thompson pitched a great game and we hit the ball. Smith said the team played well against Harding, but it wasnt enough. The 2006 Curley Wolves ended their season with a 12-14 record. Smith said the additional year was a benefit to the players. The 2007 team was made up of many of the same players and the additional year of practice and field time gave those players the experience they needed. We had strong senior leadership, Smith said. We didnt really lose anybody. Four of the teams seniors will graduate this year, leaving some gaps in the line up. But Smith said hes confident next years team members will be ready to fill those spaces. We have them, Smith said. Or well find them. Smith said the bottom line is that the members of this successful team have worked hard and been ready to face the challenges. He said it was a joy to coach the young men. Smith said parents and fans have also been an asset to the team. Thanks to the community for their support, Smith said. The parents and fans have traveled well. We had an incredible season and it was a lot of fun. Im just sorry it had to end. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
