Lions to honor officers

The terrorist attack on New Yorks twin towers brought attention to the fact that officers, firefighters and rescue personnel put their lives on the line daily. While Nevada County may not be the sprawling metropolis of New York, theres little doubt that those involved in the local law enforcement and rescue services are also sometimes called on to face dangerous situations.

That was the catalyst behind the Prescott Lions Clubs decision to hold an annual appreciation dinner for all area fire, rescue and law enforcement personnel.

For this years event, the Lions have teamed up with the Central Baptist Brotherhood. The menu will feature fish with all the trimmings. The meal will be served at Central Baptist Church Stokes Family Life Center Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m.

According to Lion Betty Steed, the local Lions Club wanted to do something to show their appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of officers, firefighters and rescue workers.

The majority of area firefighters and rescue personnel volunteer their time, energy and money to their departments. Many work without compensation and are willing to respond to wrecks, fires and other emergencies at all hours of the day and night.

Steed said the Lions Club issues invitation to all in the area who are involved with local law enforcement, fire departments and rescue units. This includes those who volunteer. Anyone who doesnt get an invitation should contact Lion Curtis Johnson at 887-6849.

Steed said Lions members know that local officers, firefighters and rescue personnel put themselves in situations that are often undesirable or unsafe. She said the club members wanted to show their appreciation for those actions.

This is just our way of doing that.
