Sherman bids Prescott, friends farewellBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, April 25, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune After more than 70 years in Nevada County, Sybil Sherman is moving away. Ive enjoyed living in Prescott and Nevada County, Sherman said during a recent interview. Its sad to leave but Ill be coming back sometimes. Sherman has dedicated much of her life to business in Nevada County and the remainder to her family, church and civic duties. Sherman said her husband, Melvin Sherman, died after only a few years of marriage. Despite being widowed at an early age, Sherman said she never remarried. Instead, she started a charter bus business in the county and an income tax preparation business, all while working for a local attorney. Shes been an active member of the First Baptist Church and the Dorcus Sunday School Class. While that would have been enough to keep most people busy, Sherman has taken college classes over the years. She said it was while she was taking classes in Hempstead County that she had the idea to organize some classes in Nevada County through Henderson State University. Some local people used the opportunity to work on their basic courses, then headed on to the area college campuses for a degree. Sherman also helped organize a group of local legal secretaries. One of their projects was to purchase bullet-proof vests for local law enforcement officials. She has been named a Business and Professional Womens Woman of the Year and has served as the Laneburg Alumni president. I worked hard at everything, she said. Several local women gathered recently to say farewell to Sherman as she prepared to make the move to Benton, closer to her daughter and son-in-law. Shes been a good friend, said Mary Johnson. Shes done a lot for this community. Sherman called Johnson a loyal friend. She said the friends she leaves behind is the most difficult aspect of the move. Its sad to leave, Sherman said. But Ill have a wonderful life up there with my daughter and her husband. Sherman said she and her daughter have plans. Those plans include taking some college courses and being involved with whatever catches her attention. I just cant settle down, Sherman said. I dont know what all well do, but well be busy.
