Ross donates computersBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, April 25, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The Prescott City Council will consider a $3,000 appropriation for the Prescott-Nevada County Library for computer equipment and software. Janet McAdams as a representative of the Friends of the Prescott-Nevada County Library. McAdams asked the Prescott City Council to approve $3,000 for software and computer equipment for the library. According to McAdams, U.S. Congressman Mike Ross donated several computers to the library, but the computers need software. McAdams said there is also a need for a back-up system. She said Danny Stewart has provided a break-down of the expenses, including the cost of building a back-up server in case of a computer crash. McAdams said that computers are in demand at the library and that Rosss donation is a boost to the endeavor to serve the need. According to a news release from Rosss office, 13 computers were donated and will allow more residents the opportunity to access educational and informational resources over the Internet at the library. Ross said that his donation would also ensure that the library has the technology and equipment for all those who depend on its services."This ensures every child and adult in my hometown of Prescott has access to a computer," Ross said. "Our nation has entered a digital age and this donation is my small part to help extend access to computers and to help give more people access to technology." The news release from Rosss office indicates that the computers Ross donated are expected to be set up for public access in the coming weeks. Up to three of them will be used for the children's area, one computer will be added to the library's genealogy room and the others will be available to the public and students after school. According to the news release, the computers donated by Ross were used in his Congressional Offices and have been formatted for public use. Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor said he knows the public computers at the library are used often. Taylor said the earliest the council could make the appropriation would be during the May council meeting. The board unanimously voted to have a resolution drawn up for the appropriation. The council will have to approve the resolution before the money is paid out. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
