William Bill HaltomPublished Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the Nevada County PicayuneWilliam Bill Haltom, 76, of Hope, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Christus St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana, Texas. He was born in Dierks, on October 9, 1930, to Louis H. and Martha Jane Cogburn Smith Haltom. He was retired as lieutenant form the Hope Police Department on Jan. 31, 1989, with more than 30 years in law enforcement having also served as assistant chief at the Prescott Police Department and deputy sheriff in Pike County. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hope; Army Veteran of Korean Conflict; member of Lions Club for many years; and just received his 50 year pin from Grand Master of State of Arkansas as a Mason of Whitfield Masonic Lodge 239. Bill loved to hunt, fish, bowl and watch any sport that involved a ball. He loved to spend time at his cabin and raised an assortment of fowl and fish that he cared for daily. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Herman Haltom; five other brothers; and six sisters. His survivors include his wife of 34 years, Velora Bright Haltom of Hope; one son, Stephen Lee Haltom and Debbie of Hughes Springs, Texas; two daughters, Betty Sue Dupuis and Johnny of Bellmead, Texas, and Patricia Carol Head and Dean of Hope; one brother, Marvin Smith of Texarkana; one sister-in-law, June Haltom of Nash, Texas; nine grandchildren, Stephen Patrick Blocker, Farrin David Blocker, Kimberly Renee Ware, Leigh Anna Masters, Jeremy Scott Haltom, Shana Joe Haltom, Stephanie Haltom, Brian Dean Head, and Amanda Leigh Cobb; seven great-grandchildren, Denver Blocker, Farrin Blcoker, Abigail Blocker, Brian Sawyer, Alexis Masters, Anjolie Head and Garrett Head; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope, with Rev. Earl Cumbie officiating. Burial was in Ayers Cemetery in Hope. Arrangements were by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope. Family received friends Monday, April 16, from 6-8 p.m. at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope.
