Picayune celebrates 130 years

Special for the Picayune
Published Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Nevada County Picayune will be celebrating 130 years in business in Nevada County on Thursday, April 26, with a coffee and open house.

Hours for the official coffee will be 9:30-11 a.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m.

We wanted to be accessible to a wide range of the community, said editor Wendy Ledbetter. Community coffees are traditionally a morning event, so we set up the morning hours to catch those who can attend at that time of day. But we decided to set up the afternoon hour for those who are working during the morning hours or who simply cant make it during the morning hours.

And of course, were open all day and anyone with time to drop in is welcome.

Ledbetter has been editor for a year.

Its like the blink of an eye compared to how long the Picayune has been part of this community, she said. Im amazed at the people who tell me they once worked at the newspaper. Ive even learned of some local connections to past owners. Its great to be part of an organization with such strong community ties. I hope I can live up to the expectations.

Lisa Martin, office manager, is a native of the county and has been at her position for more than six years.

I enjoy working here, she said. I like to talk to the people who come in and its great to have the chance to go out to take pictures. Im proud to be able to serve our customers.

Publisher George Jinks had this to say about the business and the upcoming anniversary.

We are so pleased to be a part of the Nevada County Community. Our staff is committed to the county and we want to do all we can to report the news of Nevada County and its citizens. We believe Prescott and Nevada County represent all that makes the United States great and look forward to serving all our citizens.

The Picayune office is located at 100 E. Elm St. in Prescott. Normal business hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Coffee, punch and cookies will be available to everyone who drops in on April 26.

Wed love to visit with anyone who has time to stop by, Ledbetter said. Weve pretty much put everything on hold for that day so we have time to visit with our customers.

But well still be taking ads, subscriptions and of course, photos, so feel free to take the opportunity to handle any business needs at that time as well.
