City preparing for annual clean upBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, April 11, 2007 in the Gurdon Times The city of Gurdon is preparing once again for the annual Spring clean-up to take place from April 16-20. During the clean-up week, residents will be able to place unwanted items at the curb, and employees of the Gurdon street department will pick them up, according to Gurdon Recorder/Treasurer Tambra Childres. This allows residents to get rid of items that are not picked up by normal garbage collections. The spring clean up has been one of our most popular services we offer, Childres said. It gives the citizens a chance to spruce up around their homes and make our town look better. City officials also hope that by offering to pick up unwanted items from residents homes, they will be less likely to illegally dump it elsewhere. Any resident of Gurdon who would like to have items picked up by street department employees must first get all of their junk together and placed at the curbside. After everything is at the curbside, residents must then call Gurdon City Hall to request a pick up. Childres said there will only be one pick up per household. The service is free to citizens of Gurdon, but the city does have costs associated with the clean up, Childres said. The city must cover the costs of labor and fuel for city trucks. We usually spend at least two weeks or more on this project, she said. The county has always worked with us in the past by helping us dispose of some of the rubbish. We also have a man who will come and pick up all old appliances. Items which may be picked up include appliances, furniture, old building materials and household junk. Childres said no garbage, bagged items or canned foods will be accepted. I would have to say that besides the Christmas lights and Forrest Festival, this is one of our most popular events in the city of Gurdon, Childres said. We start having calls in February asking when the Spring clean up will be. Although Spring cleaning is a not so enjoyable experience to some, Childres said some people use the opportunity to go treasure hunting in curbside piles around town. Last year, some treasure hunters scattered the items making it more difficult for the street department employees to pick up. We are asking if you go treasure hunting, please be neat, courteous, and get permission from the owners. For more information or to schedule a pick up, call Gurdon City Hall at 353-2514.
