On my mindBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in the Gurdon Times Oh, the joys of spring time. Don't you just the fact that if you wash a car, it is yellow again in five minutes or less. I wonder if people who drive yellow cars have problems with pollen. I don't know. Spring seems to bring a renewed vibrance to the community. As the dead of winter wears off, people are at the Gurdon City Park and Gurdon Lake in droves every day. Large groups play basketball, lounge under the pavilion and play on the playground, and it seems that no matter what time of day, one can find multiple people relaxing in a lawn chair on the shores of Gurdon Lake, hoping to catch a fish or two while they're at it. There's sure to be even more activity around the park, and around town in general, as students in Gurdon are out on spring break. It won't be long until the school closes down for another holiday, Good Friday. Summer will be here before we know it. Oh, and speaking of Good Friday, that reminds me Easter is just around the corner. I've got a lot of good memories about Easter from my younger years (a lot of people would tell me it wasn't that long ago). Where I come from - and I'm sure it is no different around here - we always got a new set of "Sunday clothes" for Easter. We called them out "Easter clothes" no matter what time of year we ended up wearing them after the big day. Easter always came extremely early in the morning for me. You see, my grandfather was a Baptist preacher, and I would routinely get up early enough to go with him to the sunrise services. At the time, I really didn't get the point. I thought the occasion could have just as well been celebrated at 11 a.m. when everyone else came to church. The sunrise services we attended were unique compared to those in some areas because they were attended by people of all denominations. The town had one big sunrise service, and it rotated to a different church every year. I'll admit, one of my favorite parts about the whole thing was the breakfast feast, as it seemed at the time, which was served after the sun came up. Anything one could want for breakfast was there. Then we went home, got everyone else (who were too lazy to get up for the sunrise service), and went to Sunday school. So what about sunrise services, or any special services happening around Gurdon, Curtis, Wheelen Springs, Okolona, or anywhere else in Clark County for that matter? If you want to get the word out about your services, we're putting together a special advertising section to run the week before Easter. Call us if you're interested. The phone number to the Gurdon Times is 353-4482. You can also call Sherry, our advertising manager, at 246-5525. By the way, have a happy Spring!
