Need a reason to celebrate?By Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in the Gurdon Times I believe we should take the opportunity to celebrate whenever said opportunity presents itself. But when I look at the desk calendar - the one provided by my employers - I find a serious lack of holidays over the next few months. It was quite by accident a few months ago that I found a Website dedicated to unusual holidays. I did a search and discovered that theres something to celebrate on any given day - if one has the tendency to celebrate. I do. I know lots of folks saw the pig a couple of weeks ago with the notice that National Pig Day is March 1. The notation really exists. In fact, I saw a notice on the door of the Clark County Courthouse recently that read, National Pig Day, March 1. Eat more pork. Kind of scary that someone else is thinking like me, right? In the interest of sharing the good cheer, Im going to make a list of some of the more notable (if dubious) holidays I plan to celebrate. March 21 is the First Day Of Spring (notice the capital letters). Anyone who knows me knows that this is truly a holiday in my book. In fact, I think we should all have the day off to stay home, dig in some dirt, pull a few weeds and soak up some sun. Lots of sun. Other dates of interest this week are National Toast Day and National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day. Im thinking that anything that calls for eating should be an official holiday and we should all stay home to eat. March 26 is Make Up Your Own Holiday day. Im liking that. I think it should be Sleep In Day or maybe Have Someone Buy Me a Steak Day. The 27th is National Joe day. On this day, anyone with a name they dont like may officially call themselves Joe. This is a chance to escape the fate your mom assigned you when she thought naming you after your grandma Willamena Claudarina was a good idea. Of course, theres a party pooper in every crowd and it was my daughter who asked, What if you dont like the name Joe either? National Goof Off Day is March 22. Thats my kind of holiday and I intend to honor it fully. Ill be wearing bunny slippers and playing video games. I read an article about this particular date that indicates most people will play video games when theyre goofing off. Im thinking that maybe I need a plan to make the most of a holiday of this importance. In fact, I probably need to practice just to be sure that I can goof off well enough for a holiday celebration. Maybe Ill start now. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
