Banquet was fun for all

One thing is for sure, in my opinion anyway, if you missed the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce banquet last week, you missed a treat.

Not to overwhelm you with coverage of the event since we had two news stories about it, but there are several things for which the chamber members should be proud. The first thing really stands out, but since Ive never been to a chamber banquet in Arkadelphia, I wouldnt notice it. According to Billy Tarpley, who commented briefly on the success of the banquet during the Gurdon Rotary Club meeting on March 15, there were more county officials at the Gurdon chamber banquet than usually attend the Arkadelphia banquet.

That is something to be proud of in my opinion. Im happy that they decided to attend the banquet in Gurdon even though many of them live in or near Arkadelphia. They dont have to attend our functions in this end of the county, but the fact that they do should make us all feel good about what we have going on.

One person with great influence told me that those from Arkadelphia come for the food. That may well be the truth. I thought the food was quite tasty. The ham, dressing, vegetables, salads and cheesecake were prepared by the cafeteria staff at Gurdon High School. I sure wish the high school I attended had cooks that could serve that kind of meal. Those ladies are to be commended.

Of course I cant fail to mention the wonderful presentation given by Ray Tucker, director of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. He started out with a couple of jokes that really brought the house down. Those attending really seemed to enjoy what he had to say.

I hope you are proud of what Gurdon has to offer. Billy Tarpley also mentioned to the members of Rotary that some in Arkadelphia are really trying to keep an eye on Gurdon because of the great success the town has with the Forrest Festival. It seems the people in the northern part of the county just cant rally the kind of support for the Festival of Two Rivers that the people of Gurdon get each year.

Alright, Ive strayed off topic, so Ill close with this: If youre not involved, get involved. Well see you at the chamber of commerce banquet in 2008. You wont want to miss it.
