Residents of Prescott will be facing a fine if they burn leaves after March 19. The Prescott City Council adopted an ordinance in February outlawing the burning of leaves.

According to Prescott City Manager Billy House, the ordinance becomes effective 30 days after the councils approval - putting the law in effect this week.

Prescott Police Chief Brian Russell said officers will begin by giving verbal warnings, but said the ban is now law. That means those who continue to violate the ban will face a fine. The ordinance calls for a minimum fine of $25.

The ordinance addresses only leaves. Those who have an approved incinerator may continue to burn.

The city has a truck capable of picking up leaves. According to Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor, Hines Trucking at the 44 exit of I-30 will accept clean, unbagged leaves for recycling.
