Valentine's Day royalityBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, February 21, 2007 in the Gurdon Times Helen Sanford and Clarence Haltom were crowned king and queen of the Gurdon Senior Center on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Royce Ann Barbaree said the event is an annual tradition which dates back to the beginning of the center in Gurdon. Couples raise money for the center, and the couple which raises the most is given the honorary title of King and Queen for a year. The ceremony is held each Valentines Day. Runners up for 2007 were Pat Sturch and E.T. Pruitt. The two couples together raised more than $3,000. Donations were not just given in monetary form, Barbaree said. Gifts from numerous Gurdon businesses were also obtained. The ceremony was well attended as it took place just before the centers daily lunch. One member of the crowd even came up and bowed several times to the new royalty as they sat upon their thrones dressed in their red robes.
