Workers have spent several days recently re-roofing the Union Pacific railroad depot in Gurdon, and according to UP officials, there are more improvements to come.

Its part of a renovation project we have going on this year, said Joe Arbona, director of regional public relations at Union Pacific.

It has been many years since the last new roof was put on the building as was visually evident before the new shingles went on. Crews from P.I. Roofing in North Little Rock performed the work, and they had to block off parts of First Street in order to prevent passing motorist from being hit by falling debris.

Arbona said workers are expected to put a fresh coat of paint on the facility later this year. The paint scheme will remain the same.

The depot dates back almost 100 years, and was originally a depot for the Missouri Pacific line, Arbona said.

We believe it dates back to 1918 certainly sometime in the early Twentieth Century, he said.

The depot currently houses offices for Union Pacific supervisors and other who work in and around the Gurdon area.

Its an operational depot, Arbona said.
