Gurdon firefighters have responded to two house fires recently, but no major damage was reported at either.

According to Gurdon Fire Chief Robert Burns, the fire department was called to a residence near Jiffy Mart on Saturday, Jan. 6 when an electrical outlet in the structure shorted out. He said firefighters did not have to do much at the scene.

We didnt have to spray any water or anything, he said. We just disconnected the power from it and made sure nothing was burning.

No one was injured in the incident, and damage was limited to the outlet which shorted out and some minor smoke damage.

The fire department was called out again on Wednesday, Jan. 10, when smoke was seen coming from the Bob Walker residence south of Gurdon on Arkansas 53.

The Whelen Springs Fire Department also responded to this fire, and initial reports indicated that someone may have been inside. Burns said that if there was someone inside, they had gotten out before emergency crews arrived.

Once on scene, firefighters found that someone had already applied water to the fire which was contained to the area behind the cook stove, Burns said.

There wasnt much to it, but the house filled up with smoke.

An exhaust fan was used to pull the smoke out of the residence. The damage was minor.

Burns said he is unsure as to whether the fire started as the result of an electrical fire or if it started on the cook stove.
