Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, March 17, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesRain and cold weather met us as we brought the third nine weeks period to a close. It seems as though time has flown by for this school year. Only nine weeks left before the students will be home with their families for the summer. Challenges are met every day, but Mrs. Smithson's accelerated reading classes are the contest winners over Mrs. Davies's classes. Now the fun begins! The winning classes, which you must remember is Mrs. Smithson's, are to be served popcorn and Coke by the losing classes, which are Mrs. Davies's. Mrs. Smithson loves to win and believe me, Mrs. Davies hates to lose! Watch the back door, Mrs. Smithson! The importance of the contest is to recognize the amount of reading that took place in that contest. Mrs. Smithson's class had 1,388 points and Mrs. Davies's class finished with 1,318 pages. Congratulations to each of you readers! Enjoy the popcorn and Coke. Eighth graders are waiting for the grades on their editorial cartoon notebooks. It was a learning experience for them to figure out each cartoon's meaning. John Deering, the editorial cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will be at CMS Thursday at 10:00 to speak to the eighth graders about the cartoons. We are looking forward to his visit. School will dismiss at 2:00 Thursday and Friday. Parent/teacher conferences will be conducted Thursday from 2:30 until 7:00 p.m. We are excited about having the opportunity to meet with the parents and discuss the progress of their child. Spring break is the week of March 22-March 26. Just imagine a whole week away from the students! It will be difficult. Carol Robinson from the Attorney General's office spoke to the seventh and eighth graders about 'How to Prevent Suicide.' She explained the warning signs that a person can see that might reveal one is considering suicide and ways to try to prevent that from happening. A week in March is observed as Prevent Suicide Week and the students were made aware of the seriousness of what could happen form the signs they have seen. We are still experiencing the virus and hope that you are not. So many of out teachers and students have really had a difficult time with high fever, cough and breathing. It cannot be said enough what your support means to us. We are proud of our school, community and especially the Classy Moments at CMS.
