The view from Wendy's WorldBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, January 3, 2007 in the Gurdon Times Its that time of year - when the calender page turns to a new year and most folks find themselves thinking of turning over a whole pile of new leaves. I took a few minutes out of my day to research New Years resolutions and then took a few more minutes to customize those for myself. Heres my list of resolutions. Most folks are looking to lose a few pounds, eat right and exercise more. I myself am too lazy to tackle all three of these, but I do recognize the fact that I probably cant accomplish any one of them without all three. So Im looking to compromise. I figure I can eat celery sticks while I ride the exercise bike at least a couple of hours each week. Just to make it a real workout, Ill leave my half-eaten donut in my office so that I have to walk all the way back through the building in order to finish it. Just FYI, chocolate IS a vegetable since it comes from the cocoa bean, so its a perfectly legal snack - even drizzled over a donut. Getting organized is another popular resolution. Looking at my desk, most people would say that I should resolve to get myself more organized. What seems like chaos is actually a careful, methodical, complex organizational scheme. Its true! I can almost always sift through the piles of stuff on the desks and shelves in my office and find whatever Im looking for. And if were really talking about getting organized and making better use of the space, maybe I should do away with the exercise bike. Lots of people quit something at this time of year. Smoking, excessive drinking and tons of other bad habits become history at this time of year. I dont smoke or drink in excess, so I guess I need to think of something else that I should give up. The exercise bike is actually the first thing that comes to mind. Some people use the New Year as an opportunity to pledge more time for family, friends and themselves. Thats actually a grand idea. Theres nothing more important than family and friends, and having time for yourself is vital to peace, well-being and happiness. This is actually an easy one - the time I would have spent on the exercise bike can become me time, and that time wont be spent pedaling to some imaginary destination. Maybe Im going about this all wrong. Maybe I should be looking at resolutions more in tune with my lifestyle and goals - resolutions I can keep. In that case, maybe my list should include the resolve to eat junk food whenever I have the hankering, to dust the exercise bike at least once a month, and to restack the papers on my desk on a routine basis. Now those are resolutions that make sense in my world. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
