The Nevada County Depot and Museum has a new curator. David Sesser, a graduate student at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, has taken over the position.

Phillip McAdams, president of the museum board of directors, said Sesser has the qualities necessary for the position.

Hes going to do very well, McAdams said. Were very lucky to have someone with his enthusiasm and experience.

Sesser, who has worked as a museum technician for the National Parks Service, called the museum a great resource. He is a native of Natchez, Miss., and is married to Deborah who is also a student at HSU.

What you really want in a position like this is the ability to community - written and orally, McAdams said.

He cited Sessers business and writing backgrounds as positive points.

Of course, his archival knowledge is a must, McAdams said.

Sesser has a degree in history and is working on his masters degree in the field.

Sesser said the fact that the museum exists at all is impressive. He cited larger cities that have no museums, and said he is impressed by the local support.

A lot has been done with (the museum), Sesser said. And we have a lot of big plans.

Some work has already begun. Sesser said the windows have been covered with a film that will cut the UV rays and sunlight, helping preserve the exhibits. He said the first move is to restore some items that have been damaged. He said he is also working to bring organization to the existing exhibits.

Sesser said he hopes to expand some sections of the museum, including the Civil War items and the railroad exhibits. The next step will be to increase public awareness and Sesser said he plans to utilize area schools and colleges to accomplish that.

The museum is now open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., except major holidays.

We would love for people to come and visit, Sesser said.
