Littering On Old Beirne Road A ProblemBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 17, 1999 in the Gurdon Times Garbage has been dumped on the Old Beirne Road recently, prompting the offer of a reward from a local citizen. Large appliances can be seen in the ditch, including an old refrigerator, stove and console television, along with a 50-gallon drum filled with trash. Clark County Judge Floyd "Buddy" Manning said signs have been put up telling of the $1,000 fine for littering law, and those throwing their trash out on the side of the road will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if caught. Manning has talked with the U.S. Forestry Service about the situation. At this time, the hopes are to find someone's name left on an envelope in the litter. Once a name is found, this person will be cited. "I hope we'll be able to pick it up soon," Manning said. "I'd prefer to use someone in community service to do it. "We have a landfill in east Clark County where they could take this stuff," he continued. "There's no reason for doing this." Manning has been working with Clark County Sheriff Troy Tucker as well as the Forestry Service to help prevent future incidents of littering. His assistant, Karen Jones, has been attending meetings concerning anti-litter campaigns, and an area-wide clean up could be held later on. Jones, Manning said, has been to Hot Springs going to meetings and gathering information. Once she's compiled the information a clean up day will be set. "We'll stay on top of it," he said, "and try to stop it. I don't know why people do this." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
