The Gurdon Go-Devils 2006 football season is over after the team fell 19-6 to the Hoxie Mustangs in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs on Friday, Nov. 10.

Despite the threat of rain and storms, Go-Devil Stadium was full as the Go-Devils hosted the Mustangs for the first round game. The rain-soaked home field, however, did not seem to give the Devils much of an advantage over the very large and powerful visiting team.

Both teams remained scoreless through much of the first quarter of play, however the mustangs put the first points on the board with just over five minutes off of the clock. A successful extra point attempt brought the score to 7-0.

The Go-Devils answered with a touchdown of their own with 6:11 to play in the second quarter when senior quarterback Lonnie Lacy took the ball into the end zone. An attempt for a two point conversion was not successful, and the Go-Devils narrowed the Mustangs lead to 7-6.

No other points were made during the first half, and the Go-Devils went into the locker room trailing by just one point.

The second half did not prove successful for the Go-Devils as the Mustangs defense worked overtime to keep the Devils out of the end zone.

Hoxie made the first score of the second half late in the third quarter. The Mustangs made a short run into the end zone, but their extra point attempt was no good. The Mustangs lead the Devils 13-6.

The last touchdown of the evening was made by the Mustangs with less than two minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter. A two point conversion attempt was not successful, and the Mustangs won the game with a 19-6 lead over the Devils.

The Mustangs strong defense kept the Devils yardage to a minimal in the game. The Devils had 71 yards rushing and 24 yards passing in the game.

Mario Walker lead the Devils defense with six tackles.

This game was the last for the five seniors on the football team. Four of the five were starters.

When the game was over, the Go-Devils walked off of the field without stopping for the usual mid-field comments from Head Coach John Pace.

The Go-Devils finished the season holding the second place title for the 7AAA conference. The Go-Devils lost only one conference game.
