An electric heater is thought to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a house in Gurdon on Oct. 29.

According to Gurdon Fire Chief Robert Burns, firefighters were called to the blaze at 206 Jones Street at 1:30 a.m. He said the house was a total loss.

There was quite a bit of fire damage, and then there was some smoke and water damage, he said.

Burns said most of the fire damage was contained to the kitchen, living room and bedroom.

Although early reports had firefighters believing there may have been someone inside the house at the time of the fire, it was later determined that the houses occupant was not home.

Burns said that as best he could tell, the cause of the blaze was most likely an electrical heater. These heaters are often cited as the cause of house fires during the winter months, and fire officials say those who use them should always ensure they are working properly and make sure there are no flammable objects near them.
