Go-Devils shut out Lions, 41-0By Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, November 8, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Go-Devils finished the 2006 regular football season with a 41-0 shutout over the Horatio Lions. The win leaves the Devils as the second place team in the 7AAA conference. Both teams were scoreless through most of the first quarter. With 1:56 remaining, however, senior Jonathan Lacy made a 20 yard run into the end zone for a touchdown. A successful extra point took the Devils to a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter the Devils made it clear that they intended to win the game. With 7:21 to play before halftime, OBryan Bell took the ball in for the touchdown, and an extra point made the score 14-0. With only 13 second off the clock from the last touchdown, Zack Duncan recovered the ball on a reverse kick and ran in for the six points. Another extra point set the score at 21-0. The Go-Devils continued to prove that they could not be held back by the Lions when Go-Devil #3 Jeff Henry ran the ball 85 yards for a touchdown. The extra point brought the score to 28-0. With only 36.8 seconds remaining in the third quarter of play, Lacy scored another touchdown for the Devils bringing the score to 35-0. Due to the large lead by the Go-Devils, the mercy rule was placed into effect at the beginning of the final quarter of play. This kept the clock running at all times unless a timeout or official timeout was called. The Go-Devils went on to score one final touchdown during the fourth quarter. This score came after Kendall Harper caught a pass from quarterback Lonnie Lacy in the end zone. Seven ninth graders dressed out with the senior high team on Friday, and all of them were able to play in the ballgame. After the game, Head Coach John Pace told his team that although this win was exciting, its serious business next week. The Go-Devils will host the first round of the Class AAA state play-offs as they play the Hoxie Lions at Go-Devil Stadium on Nov. 10. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. Pace said the team has a lot of work cut out for them this week as they prepare for the big game. Our defensive line has gotta stand up, he said. Pace also hopes the home field advantage helps his team for this first play-off game. Its a long trip for them. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
