Election is approachingPublished Wednesday, November 1, 2006 in the Gurdon TimesEarly voting for the Nov. 7 general election begins Monday, according to Clark County Clerk Rhonda Cole. Early voting will continue through 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 6. There are several positions local voter will be asked to consider. The mayors and aldermen of Gurdon, Okolona and Gum Springs will be elected without opposition, according to information provided by the Clark County Election Commission. In Gurdon, those positions are: Mayor Clayton Franklin; city Marshal Don Childres; alderman, Pos. 2, Gene Flowers; alderman, Pos. 6, Danny Paull. In Okolona, the unopposed candidates are: Mayor James Paul; Clerk-Treasurer, Gail Pettus; and aldermen John Hornsby, Hezy L. Barton, Brenda F. Piggee, Lorece "Sue" Muldrew and Francis J. Johnson. In Gum Springs, Mayor Jimmy C. Perry has no opponent, as is the case with three alderman positions sought by Flecia G. Bryant, Gloria L. Hill and Emma Wingfield. Johnnie J. Roebuck seeks the District 20 State Representative seat now held by her husband, Tommy Roebuck. He cannot run for the office again due to term limits. Roebuck, a Democrat, was slated to face Republican Paul Lauback in the race, but Lauback has withdrawn from the contest, according to the Arkansas Secretary of State's Office. Early ballots can be cast in Cole's office between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. Registered voters may cast their ballots early under state law. Voters need only bring a form of identification to vote. Persons without identification will be allowed to vote, but those ballots may be challenged. Voters can now check their voter registration status before election day via the World Wide Web. All registered voters in Arkansas are included in a database. That allows voters to check their registrations and make sure the information is current and to find out the address of their polling site. To access the information, go to www.sos.arkansas.gov and click on "Elections" then click on registration information. The person must provide a name and date of birth. Information provided includes the person's name and voting district, as well as local, state and congressional districts.
