The Gurdon City Council approved several ordinances and resolutions during its meeting on Monday, Oct. 23.

The two ordinances approved by the council assess taxes against the real and personal property in the city. City Recorder Tambra Childres said the taxes are not new and described them as house keeping ordinances.

Its not a new tax, she said. Its just an ordinance we have to pass each year to keep collecting what we always have.

One of the ordinances allows the city to assess a four tenth mill tax against real and personal property for the firemens pension and relief fund. The second ordinance will allow the city to collect a five mill tax against real and personal property for the citys general revenue.

Both taxes are collectable in 2007.

The council approved a resolution concerning the posting of weight limit signs on bridges in the city. Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin said there are only two bridges inside the city that are on the list. One is on front street and the other is near the rail road underpass.

Franklin added that the bridge near the underpass has ben converted to a culvert and can probably be taken off of the list.

By approving the ordinance, the city will only have to pay 20 percent of the signs cost. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department pick up the remaining costs.

In old business, Franklin said he had nothing new to report on the current status of the old Gurdon High School property. In September, the council agreed that the property needed to be cleaned up as it has become a health and safety hazzard. At the time of the September meeting, it was not clear as to who owned the property.

I havent given up on anything, Franklin told the council. I just dont have anything new to report at this time.
