Read Across America Succeeds At PMSPublished Wednesday, March 17, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneOn Tuesday, March 2, the Prescott Middle School students participated in Read Across America. Under the direction of Anne Franks, media specialist, many activities were scheduled for the day. Other activities were also scheduled for the entire week. Each day the entire student body and staff participated in DEAR - Drop Everything And Read. There were also daily drawings for paperback books. The winners were Zach Avery, Tremaine Sorrells, Cody Brown, Denise Blakely, Whitney Page, Shay Jones, Shana Johnson, Travis Box, Christopher Daniel and Erica Cason. On Tuesday, Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday, all PMS students were give book marks by the library aides. The staff was also served breakfast of green eggs and ham by these students. The library aides were Heather Pruitt, Buddy Buck, Latisha Smith, Sarah Jobe, Denise Blakely, Andrea Hawthorne, and Josie Niemyer. The unique breakfast was provided by the Prescott Middle School lunchroom staff. Mrs. Debra Culpepper's FACS class prepared the green eggs in conjunction with an egg unit that they were studying. Students also entered a riddle contest. Those who answered correctly were Josh Bryan, James Petrovich and Craig Teague. There were also drawings for personal pan pizzas. These winners were Ashley Jackson, Latisha Smith, Angie Jackson, Darryl Pickett, Brody Joyce, Candace Barkley, Jazmiin Brown, Jessica Jones, Adam McKinnon, Patricia Weaver, Sean Hart, Greg Britton, Daniel Hebert, and Bryan Applegate. Many students participated in 'Hats Off to Reading' by wearing their favorite hat during the day. Several individual teachers scheduled other fun events during the day in honor of Read Across America. Mrs. Linda Formby's reading classes had several guest readers throughout the day. The students enjoyed readings by Mary Godwin, Ron Wright, Glenda Westmoreland and Martha Butler. Principal James Gober also presented a talk to these students on the importance of reading. Niki Byers presented her sixth grade students with Dr. Seuss stickers. The seventh grade students from Audra Honea's advanced English class read to the students of Prescott Elementary School. Debra Culpepper's second project FACS class read to the Nevada County Day Service Center students and presented them with book marks. Dawn Higgs' eighth grade classes were entertained with original stories written by their classmates. At the end of the day, students were treated to reading of books by Dr. Seuss, including the favorite Green Eggs and Ham.
