Wolves win guaranteed conference playBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, October 18, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune The Wolves will be in the conference playoffs. The Wolves' win against the Lafayette Cougars not only provided fans with another Wolf win, but guaranteed the Wolves a place in the conference. The 2006 Prescott Curley Wolves have consistently managed to grab a touchdown with their very first possession, and the game against Lafayette was no exception. The game was a crowd pleaser and the Wolves spent plenty of energy both on offensive and defensive plays. Fans who may have been superstitious about the game being played on Friday the 13th needn't have worried and the date turned out to be bad luck only for the Lafayette Cougars. The final score - 40-32 - makes the Prescott Curley Wolves 4-0 in conference play and sitting in excellent position for conference finals. Directly after the half, the Wolves handed the ball over without scoring, but didn't wait long before they grabbed a touchdown making the score 26-18. With about 9 minutes left in the final quarter, the Wolves snatched the football back from Lafayette, putting Prescott back in the driving seat - the move that cinched the game for the Wolves. With a standing score of 33-26 for the Wolves, Prescott fans had a reason to cheer. DeMarcus Collier brought fans to their feet with the next Curley Wolf touchdown. Quarterback Ben Smith held for Justin Marcum and the extra point brought the score to 40-26 with less than seven minutes left to play. Over the next few minutes, a series of penalties against first Lafayette then Prescott occurred before Lafayette called for a time out. The pep talk apparently worked because the Cougars managed another touchdown with just less than two minutes left to play. The extra point was no good - just as each Cougar attempt had been over the course of the game. The Cougars did manage one additional touchdown but it wasn't enough to take the win away from the Wolves. The Wolves had 14 first downs and 176 yards of rushing. Lafayette actually beat the Wolves with regard to passing. The Wolves had 204 yards passing while the Cougars had 211 yards. Smith gave up one interception while Lafayette gave up two interceptions.
