The Clark County Sanitation Department will be holding its annual county-wide pick up at the end of October.

Clark County Judge Ron Daniell said county residents living outside of the city limits of Arkadelphia, Gurdon and Amity can sit items out to be picked up which are not picked up on everyday garbage routes.

Items that can be picked up by county crews include appliances, furniture, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, household items, metal items and wood items. Due to landfill restrictions, however, Daniell said things such as paint, batteries, cardboard, newspaper, paper products, burned items and bagged items such as household trash cannot be picked up during this time.

In order to have ones residence added to the list of stops that will be made during the pick-up period, Daniell said residents must phone the road department at 246-7602. The deadline to be added to the list is Oct. 20. Pick-up will begin on Monday, Oct. 23.

The pick-up has been occurring each fall in Clark County since 1994, Daniell said. He noted that more and more people are using the service which is provided free of charge to county residents.

County workers picked up a little less last year, Daniell said, because some were going ahead of the crew picking metal items out of the piles.

Year before last it took us two weeks to get to everybody, Daniell said. Last year we did it in just over a week.

There were close to 300 residents that used the service last year.

For residents who have hazardous materials to do away with, Daniell said there will be an opportunity to safely get rid of those items on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. until noon. He said crews will be at the Clark County Fairgrounds on U.S. 67 in Arkadelphia accepting items such as paint, tires and other household chemicals that cannot be placed in a landfill.
