It's time for the annual trash pick up in Nevada County.

Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mary Godwin said area businesses, civic clubs, organizations and individuals are invited to participate for cash prizes. But more importantly, it's an opportunity to clean up the county.

Godwin said the ultimate goal is to pick up as much litter around the

county as possible.

The event is slated for Oct. 28. Registration will begin at 8:30. Teams or individuals must register in order to qualify for prizes. Godwin said teams can be a single person or 15 people.

At registration time, the chamber will provide trash bags and gloves for all those working. Teams are encouraged to pick up aluminum cans separately and Godwin said those cans will be taken for recycling. The first 50 to register will also receive a T-shirt.

At 9 p.m., workers will be released to start work. Godwin said there will be no pre-assigned areas, meaning groups can work anywhere they choose.

This is a good opportunity for those who want to pick up on their

"adopt-a-mile" highways and streets, Godwin said.

Groups will be required to return at 11 a.m. when all the collected trash will be weighed. Those who gather the most trash by weight will be awarded cash prizes - $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third.

Godwin said only items that can be bagged will be weighed.

The project has become an annual event in Prescott and is in conjunction with the "Keep Arkansas Beautiful" campaign.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for groups to help the community," Godwin said. She said the teams may include employees from a particular business, and said Firestone's Prescott facility plans to participate. She said church and civic groups may also find this a perfect chance for community service.

The city will also be picking up large household items that arent normally collected at the curb, Godwin said. Anyone with items to be picked up should contact the chamber office. Godwin said collection of those items will begin at the same time as the Prescott clean up.
