Jr. Go-Devils meet Curley Cubs at PrescottBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, October 4, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The Prescott Curley Cubs scored during the first minutes of play against the Gurdon Jr. Go-Devils. Then the Cubs earned another touchdown and the Devils never seemed to recover from that devastating beginning. Gurdons Bobby Purifoy kicked off for the Go-Devils with Prescotts Gavin Bostick set to receive. It took only a few minutes for Cub Chris Smith to carry the football for the Cubs first touchdown. The Go-Devils pushed back at the Cubs for that initial play, but the Cubs refuse to yield and eventually end up with the ball for another touchdown - this one by Bostick - before the end of the first quarter. Gurdons #22, Drew Griffin received for Gurdon on the next play and takes the ball to the 38-yard line. This time, the Go-Devils werent as easily pushed around and Gurdons Anthony Lowdermilk took the ball in for Gurdons first touchdown of the evening. The extra points were good and the score ran to 14-8. Bostick and Lowdermilk met up again a few plays later with Lowdermilk making the tackle that put Bostick on the ground for Prescotts second down. It seemed that the Go-Devils might have been gaining a little momentum and ready to make up some points. Then a personal foul against Gurdon gave Prescott a vital few yards. Gurdons Jarod Shaver made a good run during that period, but couldnt make the goal and the halftime buzzer sounded with the Cubs still in the lead, 22-8. With halftime over, the Cubs hit the field and quickly took the ball for yet another touchdown. When Gurdon again took possession of the ball, the Go-Devils almost immediately grabbed a procedural penalty that cost them several yards. It seemed the Cubs werent doing any better on that count and they gave the yards back to the Devils with a penalty of their own. There were several occasions on the field that seemed to be one team mimicking the other. In one instance, Purifoy prepared to kick but the Cubs make the tackle before he can get the football airborne. The Devils retaliated a few plays later with Purifoy making the tackle in the backfield just short of the 20-yard line, putting Prescott at a third down. On the next play, Smith was tackled by Gurdons Xavier Arnold for a fourth down. Prescott couldnt recover from those hits and turned the football over to Gurdon. It wasnt in time for the Go-Devils to do anything with it, and the third quarter ended with the score at 30-8. During the next series of plays, the Go-Devils again invade Curley Cub country and Purifoy makes the touchdown. When Gurdon next kicks, Cub #24 receives. The Cubs put up a protective wall and the few Go-Devils who manage to get through simply miss their mark, allowing another Cub touchdown. The Devils couldnt let that play go unanswered and do manage another touchdown of their own, leaving the final score at 52-22. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
