The much anticipated conference match up between the Gurdon Go-Devils and the Prescott Curley Wolves left fans on both sides of the field on the edge of their seats right up until the final seconds of the game. In the end, however, the Go-Devils fell 18-21 to their biggest rival.

Gurdon took an early lead in the game when senior OBryan Bell scored a touchdown within the first four minutes of the opening quarter. An attempt by the Go-Devils to make a two-point conversion was no good, and the score remained at 6-0.

The Curley Wolves did not let the Go-Devils hold on to the lead long. After being assessed a five-yard penalty for a false start, the Wolves ran the ball in for a touchdown. Prescott took the lead in the game after a successful field goal attempt added an extra point to the board. With 4:50 to play in the opening quarter, the Wolves were ahead 7-6.

The second quarter of play was a fierce defensive battle for both teams with no points being scored by either team and allowing Prescott to remain ahead going to the locker room.

The second half of the game seemed to begin much like the first. With 8:08 left in the third quarter, senior Go-Devil quarterback Lonnie Lacey ran the ball more than 20 yards for a touchdown. Gurdon attempted a two-point conversion but was unsuccessful.

Once again, the Curley Wolves answered back with a touchdown and successful two-point conversion. With 4:25 left in the third quarter, the Wolves were in the lead 15-12.

Gurdon almost ended the third quarter in the lead. The Go-Devils ran the ball in more than 50 yards for a touchdown, but the ball was called back to the 41 yard line because of a holding penalty against the team.

Less than one minute into the final quarter of play, Curley Wolf Deon Accor scored his teams third touchdown of the night. An attempt for a two-point conversion was no good.

After recovering a Curley Wolf fumble, a completed pass to junior Go-Devil Andrew Frankin and a 43 yard run resulted in a touchdown. An attempt for a two-point conversion was no good, and with 5:58 to play Prescott continued to lead Gurdon 18-21.

No other points were added to the board during the final minutes of play.

After the game, Gurdon Head Coach John Pace told his team he was proud of the way they played in the game. You play like that the rest of the time, and youll never lose another game, he said. Weve still got play-offs to look forward to.

Prescott Head Coach Greg Smith was equally proud of his team and noted the mentality of this particular game. This was a very intense, emotional battle, he said. When you can play defense as long as we played, you know you can win any game you play. Thats the best weve done all year.

Smith said the Prescott-Gurdon game has always been a huge rivalry, but this is the first year in recent history the teams have met in a conference match-up.

The Senior High Go-Devils travel to Fouke on Oct. 6. Junior high play is slated for Oct. 5 against Fouke at Go-Devil stadium in Gurdon.

Prescotts senior high team will take on Horatio at Cummins Stadium in Prescott for homecoming.
