Devils top CenterpointBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, September 27, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Go-Devils are undefeated in conference play after shutting out the Centerpoint Knights 49-0 Friday night at Centerpoint. The Go-Devils took the lead early in the game when a 51 yard run by Lonnie Lacey resulted in a touch down with 9:20 to play in the first quarter. An extra point attempt by the Go-Devils was unsuccessful. On the kick return, the Go-Devils kicked the ball out of bounds, resulting in the Knights getting the ball on their own 35-yard line. The Knights soon fumbled the ball and it wasn't long until Gurdon had scored another touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt was no good, and with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter, the Go-Devils remained on top 12-0. Lacey made his third touchdown of the evening after Go-Devil Jonathan Lacey recovered the ball from an off-side kick. The two-point conversion was caught in the end zone by Zach Duncan, bringing the Go-Devils to a 20-0 lead over the Knights. The Go-Devils would score one final touchdown in the first quarter of play with only 54 seconds on the clock. An extra point attempt was successful, and the teams ended the period with Gurdon leading, 27-0. It took nearly half of the second quarter before the Go-Devils would put more points on the scoreboard. After a turn-over by the Knights, L. Lacey ran the ball in for another touch down. A two point conversion was good, and with 6:07 to play in the half, the Go-Devils were ahead, 35-0. The teams went to halftime with the Go-Devils leading 42-0 after another touchdown and two-point conversion were successful. After returning from the break, the "mercy rule" was invoked, and the clock never stopped running in the second half. The Go-Devils scored one final touch down and successfully kicked for an extra point. The game ended with the Go-Devils winning, 49-0. The Knights never made a first down in the second half. The Go-Devils will face the Prescott Curley Wolves Friday at Go-Devil stadium. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
