Wolves win! Gurdon's nextBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, September 27, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune The Prescott Curley Wolves pressed directly down the field for a touchdown during the first few minutes of play and that set the stage for the remainder of the game. The final score was 49-20. The Bismarck Lions are predicted to finish last in the conference, a fact that Prescott Coach Greg Smith said could have been a problem for the Wolves. Its tough when you come out and you see an opponent that might not have a solid footing, Smith said. Its really easy to overlook an opponent like that but Bismarck has some hard hitters. Prescott had 13 first downs in the first half while Bismarck had only one. The Prescott Curley Wolves intercepted the Bismarck Lions only attempt at a pass during the entire first half. Prescotts early touchdown would have been less devastating for the Lions if the Wolves hadnt immediately taken possession of the football again at their own seven-yard line. Justin Marcum kicked the ball to the five but the Lions couldnt hold on for a run. With that turnover, the Wolves were firmly in place for another touchdown. It was DeMarcus Collier who got stopped just one yard short of yet another touchdown, but the Wolves easily took that yard on the next play. B.J. Haynie and James Threadgill each made runs during that first half that put Prescott up by 35 points. The second half went at least somewhat better for the Lions with the team managing three touchdowns. Smith said one of the positive points for the Wolves was the fact that some players who seldom get playing time on Friday nights were on the field against Bismarck. We got some quality playing time for some younger players, Smith said. He said that not only improves moral of those players, but also gives the coaching staff an opportunity to better evaluate their abilities on the playing field. Gurdon and Prescott are ranked first and second in the conference and the two schools will meet Friday, Sept. 29, at Go-Devil Stadium for varsity play. Junior high will meet at Cummings Field on Sept. 28. Some fans have said that the Gurdon-Prescott game will likely determine who will be the overall winner in the conference for the 2006 high school football season. Its going to be a battle, Smith said. Any time Gurdon and Prescott hook up its a battle. Smith cited the fact the Gurdon is predicted to be number one in the conference, and said it has created an air of confidence for that team. They are a good football team, he said. Well have to go down to Gurdon and knock them off their feet. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
