Budget is a dirty word for many families today. Budget brings to mind thoughts of a inflexible pattern of spending that takes all the fun out of having a little money.

The 'in' term is 'spending plan.' Actually, planning the way you are going to spend your money will result in greater satisfaction, because planning enables you to get the things you'd most like to have if they are within your income range.

Start by writing down your family income this is a total of salaries, interest dividends and other income. Next estimate your expenses based on past expenditures. The best way to make a realistic estimate is to keep a written record of what you actually spend for a month or two.

Recording all your expenditures is quite a task, but it will really open your eyes as to where your money goes. An easy way might be to carry a pocket calendar or the Extension Expense Record Book with you and write purchases down each day.

Now, are you satisfied with the things your money is doing for you? If not, change your spending plan.

To learn more about how to manage your personal finances, watch for Money 2000 and Beyond programs offered in your local area.
