It was a heartbreaking night for the Prescott Curley Wolves as they met the Nashville Scrappers on the Nashville High School Playing field. The Wolves simply couldnt get the edge they needed to grab a lead and once they were behind, the game was all but over.

The positive news for Curley Wolf fans is that the game was a non-conference match-up. The bad news is that the Wolves got tromped by more than 40 points with a final score of 51-19.

The game started on a fairly even keel though the Scrappers drew first blood. The Wolves managed an answer but the first quarter ended with the Scrappers ahead, 21-7.

As the second quarter started, the Wolves seemed to have found a new energy and it took only about a minute for them to score the first points of the period to bring the score to 21-13 with the Scrappers still leading.

The Wolves didnt hand over the yards, but the Scrappers were relentless and pushed their way to another 7 points.

The Wolves began the return push but couldnt make it happen and the Scrappers took the ball for another touchdown.

As soon as the teams took the field after halftime, the Wolves showed that early energy and again took a touchdown in the first few minutes of play.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking moments of the game were during the next few plays. The Scrappers nabbed the football for a 97-yard run for a touchdown.

In another play, the Wolves were handed a 45-yard advantage through a series of three penalties against the Scrappers, including one for unsportsmanlike behavior. The Prescott boys labored their way to the one-yard line where they were stopped by the Scrappers defense. The Wolves failed to make a first down, resulting in a turnover. The Scrappers used the failed attempt for another touchdown.

The Nashville Scrappers are listed in the 7 4A conference and are expected to take the lead in their own conference play.

Prescott Head Coach Greg Smith said the Nashville team had a great advantage in numbers and age.

There are a couple of issues, Smith said. One is that youve got a really good football team in Nashville, and a young football team in Prescott.

Smith said the turnovers were detrimental to the Wolves.

You had three turnovers and they capitalized on the three that we gave them.

The Nashvilles potent offense was another battle the Wolves just couldnt win, Smith said.

Looking ahead, the Wolves are slated to meet the Hope Bobcats at Cummings Staduim. The Bobcats are in the 5A West conference and are expected to be in the top three contenders for conference champs.

Smith said his goal with regard to non-conference play is to pit the Wolves against the toughest competitors possible. Asked about the Bobcats, Smith said, That has got to be a really good football team.

Smith said the players will be focusing on defensive plays over the next week.

Well have to do a better job at tacking, he said.

The home field advantage could be extremely important for the young Wolves, Smith said. The next two games will be at Prescott.
