Martha RodgersPublished Wednesday, August 30, 2006 in the Gurdon TimesMartha Virginia Rodgers, 83, formerly of Hot Springs, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at St. John Holy Cross Hospital. She was born on Feb. 21, 1923, at Gurdon to the late Grace Cunningham McKinney and the late Dave McKinney. She had retired from the Gurdon Public School System as a teacher, from the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a communication expert and as a church pianist for more than 50 years. She played for the Philander Smith College Choir; the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church Choir in Gurdon, and the Eureka Baptist Church in Hot Springs . In her later years, she resided with her niece, Elana D. McKinney, at Detroit, Mich. She traveled extensively, enjoyed family and friends, outings and holidays. She was an avid political activist and worked for the Affirmative Action Incentive in the State of Michigan. She is survived by her brother, David W. McKinney, of Guleph, Ontario, Canada; seven nieces and nephews. Funeral services will scheduled for Monday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Eureka Baptist Church at Hot Springs, with the Rev. Steve Lake II and Johnnie Harris officiating. Burial was to be at the Greenwood Cemetery at Hot Springs by the P.K. Miller Mortuary.
