Task force asks for school suppliesBy John NelsonPublished Wednesday, August 9, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The Task Force for Closing the Achievement Gap amongst Gurdon School System students met Aug. 3 and addressed the issue of children who can not afford school supplies to begin their school year. Chairman Charles Bullard said the group is asking area churches or individuals for donations of school supplies or cash to help students who can not afford items, such as paper, pencils or backpacks. The students need to have them before the Aug. 21 opening day of school. "We want to help the children have the tools they need to attend," he said. "If you are not sure what supplies a child will need in primary or middle school, Wal-mart has lists." Those interested in donating to students who can not afford the supplies may contact Bullard at 353-6218 or Bonnie Ross at 353-4454 at the superintendents office, or Rita Roe, principal for Gurdon Primary School, at 353-4321. Bullard said the task force is investigating the possibility of getting computers for the economically challenged students as well. The next meeting for the task force will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Gurdon High School student center. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
