Fireworks: the city's rules

Residents of the City of Prescott have the right to discharge fireworks, though there are some limitations.

Prescott Chief of Police Brian Russell said there isnt a ban on fireworks as there are in some cities. However, Russell said officers who respond to complaints about noise from fireworks after 11 p.m. will inform those making the noise that its time to stop.

According to information from the police department, officers typically answer a number of phone calls regarding fireworks at this time of year. Russell said most people are cooperative when told to stop, but said police do have the right to take action if the persons discharging fireworks simply refuse to obey.

Russell said officers will confiscate the fireworks if the offenders persist.

While there are no laws in place regarding particular behaviors, Russell said some actions are simply common sense. If the weather is hot and dry, increasing the risk of fires, officers will also be on the lookout for those acting recklessly with their fireworks.

Naturally, if youre shooting off one of those big sparklers next to a dry hay field, were going to shut you down, Russell said.

The Fourth of July is probably the most popular time of year for fireworks, making fireworks stands and the discharging of fireworks a common practice during the first few days of the month. The National Council on Fireworks Safety monitors many aspects of fireworks, including injuries. According to information from this council, the number of fireworks sold and discharged increases annually, though injuries have generally decreased. This is partly due to diligence on the part of those taking part in the discharging, but is also due to increased safety regulations regarding the manufacture.

Children should be supervised to prevent accidents and common sense should prevail. Other tips from the council include:

Have water handy

Never relight a dud that didnt go off

Buy only from reputable dealers and follow the instructions

The council indicates that homemade fireworks account for the majority of the injuries over the past several years.
