Sign-up begins for summer reading at Cabe LibraryBy John NelsonPublished Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The Cabe Librarys Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales 2006 Summer Reading Program will begin on June 13. Librarian LeElna Davidson said children who participate will be asked to keep reading logs. Summer reading logs must be turned in to the front desk at the library by noon on Friday, July 14, so that winners may be calculated. "The registration for the program begins this week, with Tuesday, June 6, having been the first day to sign up," Davidson said. "Story time programs, for those 3 to 6 years old, will meet at 10 a.m., from Tuesday, June 13, through Tuesday, July 18." Davidson said Julie Watson, childrens librarian, will be in charge again this year. Any area student, ranging in age from 6 to 12, is eligible to participate in the summer reading, according to Davidson. Students must be able to read independently in order to participate. The older students will meet Tuesdays at 2 p.m. Children may start signing up for the weekly prizes on the first meeting day of summer reading, on June 13. Everyone who registers will receive a bag, bookmark, pencil and a reading log to record the number of books read. Davidson said, "Students are encouraged to read books on their skill level and to keep up with the reading logs." Davidson said readers reporting at least one book each week will be eligible for a weekly drawing for a prize. Participants are asked to report to the front desk by Tuesday of each week to have their names entered. A name will be drawn at 2 p.m. every Tuesday at the afternoon program. A child may only win one weekly prize, but they may continue to enter their names daily for the end of program prizes. The 2 p.m. program will last approximately an hour. The awards ceremony honoring all participants will be on July 18 following the last program. Each child returning their reading log with at least one book read will receive a certificate. Children reaching their goal, and top readers in each grade, will also receive an award. Readers must be present to win the top reading prizes. Story time On June 13, the program for the younger children will be, "Here Kitty, Kitty," and those participating are encouraged to bring their stuffed kittens. On June 20, the program will be, "Snakes, frogs, lizards and other creepy things." The group will explore some "not so pretty pets." The storytime theme for June 27 "Doggie Days." Participants are asked to bring in stuffed dogs. The Cabe Library will be closed for Independence Day and there will be no story time on July 4. On July 11, the theme will be "Down on the farm." Listeners are encouraged to grab their farming clothes and head to the library. On July 18, the final program for story time will be, "Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My!" The stories will last approximately 45 minutes. Summer reading There will be five summer reading programs at 2 p.m. for the older children The theme on June 13 will be, "Bunny Lady." On June 20, it will be, "Live Snakes from DeGray State Park." On June 27, the program will be, "the Clark County Museum." No program will be held on July 4. On July 11, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will make a presentation about Mammals. A magician will create the program for the final July 18 reading presentation.
