Nevada County Quorum Court discusses the roof and a pipelineBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, May 17, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune The roof of the Nevada County Courthouse, a pipeline slated for the county and an update from the local economic development office were the top items on the agenda for the May meeting of the Nevada County Quorum Court. County Judge James Roy Brown said the local Firestone plant has donated all the material for the roof, meaning the county can afford to get that project underway quickly. Brown said bids were slated to be opened early this week and that the good news for the county is that theres now likely to be some money left in the roof fund for some other projects. The county has $100,000 set aside for working on the roof. That funding was a result of efforts by State Senator Percy Malone over two legislative sessions, according to Brown. The fact that Firestone donated the materials means the county will only be responsible for paying for the installation. Its going to leave us some money, Brown told members of the quorum court. Brown said the money can now be spent on some other projects around the courthouse. The heating and air conditioning in the court room has been erratic over recent months. Brown said the heating unit is probably about 30 years old and that replacing that unit could be an option. Painting and some other minor projects could be slated as well, according to Brown. He said he has plenty of project ideas in mind, including replacing a water cooler that has been notoriously unpredictable. We may run out of money before I get to it, he said. In a report from Nevada County Economic Development Office Executive Director Donnie Crain, there continues to be ongoing conversations with several interested parties with regard to locating businesses locally. Its a slow, ongoing process, Crain said. Crain also reported that work on the walking trail located at the northern end of Prescott has been halted because of the rain. Crain said that the project will be completed in only a few days once the ground is dry enough for crews to work. Nevada County Judge James Roy Brown said that a company has announced their intention of running a pipe line across a portion of Nevada County. The company, Continental Connector, is located in Houston, Texas. Company representatives are traveling around the county working toward rights-of-way easements for the project. Brown said the project shouldnt affect the county government in any form or fashion. According to Brown, the original plan was to have the pipe line cross Hempstead County. However, when the site inspections began, it was discovered that the plan had put the project across the military proving grounds. The new plan takes the pipeline across the county. There is a map of the planned location, though there are few details to show the exact route. Letters were sent out to some Nevada County landowners on April 20. According to information on file at the companys website, filings regarding the planned project is on file at the Prescott-Nevada County Library.
